LSSO Re-Registration & New Registration

LSSO Re-Registration

Each Spring, LSSOs are required to re-register in order to receive recognized status at the Law School. Re-registrations and new LSSO registrations only occur in the Spring quarter. LSSOs who miss this deadline become inactive and must wait one year to register for recognized status.

LSSOs should first hold their elections/applications. Either the incoming or outgoing President can submit re-registration materials. The Presidents should work together on the re-registration. The outgoing board members must work with the new board members on their registration materials as part of the transition process.

To prepare for the re-registration process, LSSOs must take the following steps:

  1. Presidents and Treasurers must attend the LSSO Transition Planning meeting in the Spring quarter. Both must attend in order for your LSSO to be eligible to register.
  2. Advertise your board elections through lsa_elections@lists.uchicago.edu.
  3. Hold your board elections about two weeks before the registration deadline. Remember: eligibility for LSSO leadership must also be open to all law students and cannot be limited in any manner.
  4. Submit your list of new board members by filling out this form
  5. Submit your LSSO re-registration through Law Connect.

LSSO Re-Registration Form:

  • Log into Law Connect when the re-registration form opens (Announced by DOS during Transition Planning Meeting)
  • Click on the "Groups" icon on the top bar
  • Select your LSSO
  • Click on Blue Button "Re-Registration Required" and the form will open

Once submitted, applications will be reviewed by LSA.

LSSO Re-Registration Components

On the LSSO re-registration form, provide the following information:

  • The names of four board members: a President, a Vice-President or Co-President, a Treasurer, and an Events Coordinator.
    • These four positions must be filled by four different individuals and separate from the 10 member requirement.
    • Students can be either President or Co-president of one LSSO and Co-President of one additional LSSO. Affinity groups that have difficulty nominating a presidential candidate due to these restrictions should speak with the Dean of Students Office.
  • The names of 10 members of your LSSO, different from your 4 required board positions.
  • A copy of your LSSO bylaws, including any updates for the new year.
  • A description of the mission and purpose of your LSSO.
  • A statement detailing your goals for programs and activities in the upcoming academic year.
  • A statement as to how your LSSO will benefit the entire Law School in the upcoming academic year.
  • A description of how your LSSO is different from other LSSOs. Additionally, a description as to which other LSSOs are similar to your own in terms of purpose or goals.
  • A description as to how you will ensure that your LSSO will be sustainable beyond the upcoming year. If your LSSO was not very active in the previous year, what will you change for the upcoming year to ensure that your group has an active presence at the Law School?

Affinity Group Re-Registration

Affinity groups have a separate re-registration form. Due to the variability in size for affinity groups from year to year, affinity groups will have the following requirements:

  • The name of at least one board member. If only one board member, it must be the President.
  • Names of additional members will not be required.
  • A copy of your LSSO bylaws, including any updates for the new year.
  • A description of the mission and purpose of your LSSO.
  • A statement  about your goals for programs and activities in the upcoming academic year.
  • A statement as to how your LSSO will benefit the entire Law School in the upcoming academic year.
  • A description as to how your LSSO is different from other LSSOs.

LSSO Affinity Re-Registration Form:

  • Log into Law Connect when the re-registration form opens (Announced by DOS during Transition Planning Meeting)
  • Click on the "Groups" icon on the top bar

  • Click on Blue Button "Re-Registration Required" and the form will open

Once submitted, applications will be reviewed by LSA.

New LSSO Registration

Students may submit their proposal for a new student organization when registration opens in the Spring Quarter. Review the current list of LSSOs to ensure that there is a need for this new organization and that it will not duplicate the goals and mission of an existing LSSO. Proposals that duplicate an existing organization are unlikely to receive recognized status.

New LSSO Registration form:

  • Log into Law Connect when new registration form opens (Announced by DOS to 1Ls and 2Ls via email)
  • Click on the "Groups" icon on the top bar
  • Click on Blue Button "Register new LSSO" and the form will open

Once submitted, applications will be reviewed by LSA. If approved, please submit your list of new board members by filling out this form

If you have questions about the application process or about your proposal, you should meet with Candace Mui (mui@uchicago.edu) in the Office of the Dean of Students.
