A Message from the Dean

Dean Miles

The University of Chicago Law School is distinctive for its unabashed enthusiasm for the life of the mind—the conviction that ideas matter, that they are worth discussing, and that a single viewpoint or style of thought should not be imposed. Our faculty produce path-breaking ideas about the most important questions of law and legal institutions through intense inquiry, a multiplicity of approaches, and searching dialogue. In our classrooms and clinics, the faculty expose students to contrasting views, developing students’ abilities to think critically and choose their own paths.

Inquiry and learning are more rigorous when multiple perspectives are brought to bear, and this is why the intellectual life of the Law School is more vibrant when it includes highly talented students and faculty with a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives who participate fully. It is also why our values of diversity and inclusion are closely linked to our commitment to free expression and academic freedom. In these ways, diversity and inclusion strengthen the research and teaching missions of the Law School.

This spirit of searching and even bold inquiry requires an openness to other perspectives and experiences and a willingness to offer a new viewpoint or idea. The law grapples with some of the most complex, important, and controversial issues in our world, and this makes the study of the law fascinating. It may also make it challenging to offer a new thought on a contentious topic or to articulate a view on a disputed question. The ability to engage with differing viewpoints on tough questions is a professional skill that we seek to impart to students at the Law School.

We aspire to do this through participatory teaching in each of our curricular offerings. In addition, the Law School offers a rich set of programs to welcome students, equip them to thrive in our academic program, and to build community. The University, as well as the Law School, also provide resources to support students individually and opportunities to celebrate our differences.

Thank you for joining us in this exciting intellectual journey.

Best wishes,
