Degree candidates participating in the University Convocation and the Law School's Diploma & Hooding Ceremony must have successfully satisfied all curriculum requirements and passed all examinations.  In addition, all degree candidates must complete an online degree application through the portal by 5:00 p.m. on Friday March 30. The deadline is set by the University Office of the Registrar and no exceptions will be made.

Academic Attire

A degree candidate wears the robe and cap appropriate for the degree he or she is to receive at Convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. All Law School graduates will receive an academic hood at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony.  The academic hood is a gift from the Law School and graduates do not need to rent a hood or bring one with them to the ceremony. 

JD candidates wear official University of Chicago JD regalia, a maroon robe with black velvet stripes and a black velvet tam.  JD graduates will receive an academic hood at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony.   

LLM and MLS candidates wear official University of Chicago Masters regalia, a black robe (no velvet stripes) and a black mortarboard cap. LLM graduates will receive an academic hood at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony. LLM students will be able to keep the robe and mortarboard as keepsakes.

Beginning April 2, 2018 degree candidates should secure academic attire in one of the following ways:

  • Visit to place an order online
    • JD candidates should select PhD and JD Degree Rental (JD regalia rentals will be available for pickup at the University of Chicago Bookstore beginning June 4.) 
    • LLM and MLS candidates should select Masters Degree Purchase (Masters regalia will be available for pickup at the University of Chicago Bookstore beginning April 2.)
  • Visit the University of Chicago Barnes & Noble Bookstore (970 E. 58th Street) and place an order in person. 

All graduation attire orders must be placed by May 8, 2018.

JDs must return their academic attire (except hood) to the University of Chicago Bookstore immediately following the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony.  A late fee of $20.00 will be assessed for all gowns returned after June 11 at 6:00 p.m.

Graduates with additional questions regarding renting or purchasing graduation attire should contact Erin Sedona Smith at and put “Law School Regalia Question” in the subject line.

No adornment of any kind can be worn outside the robe or on the cap. The University Marshals reserve the right to prevent graduates from marching if they do not adhere to academic attire restrictions.   

Hints for Dressing

Most men wear shirts and ties under their robes. (Don't wear a jacket because it is usually very hot. Those graduates wishing to wear a jacket for the reception should have a guest carry the jacket.) Most wear dark dress pants or khakis and dress shoes or loafers. Most women wear dresses or pants with pumps or sandals. Please keep in mind that these robes are very hot and most years it manages to get into the 90s. Most guests wear business or business casual attire.

    Saturday Sabbath Observers 

    If religious observances keep you from being able to participate in specific aspects of the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony (carrying a hood or diploma, for example), please email the Office of the Dean of Students general email address at and the Convocation staff in the Office of University Events and Ceremonies at (773) 702-2513 or email by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 2.

    Family Hooders

    Family members, spouses, and University-recognized domestic partners who have received a degree from the University of Chicago Law School are eligible to hood graduating students. Students wishing to have a family member hood them must submit an application at by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20. Only one family hooder is permitted per student.

    Diploma & Hooding Ceremony Tickets

    All guests must have tickets to attend the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony in Rockefeller Chapel and for the Simulcast in the Law School Auditorium.  Only students who are marching in the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony are eligible to receive tickets.    

    Tickets are not required for the University Convocation Ceremony. 

    Ticket Details

    Graduating students will receive an email from the Office of the Dean of Students in April with detailed information on how to obtain tickets.

    • Tickets will be available via the online portal beginning Monday, April 30 at 12:00 p.m. through Wednesday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m.  
    • JD candidates will each receive up to four tickets to the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony. LLM, JSD, and MLS candidates will each receive up to two tickets to the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony. 
    • Each graduating student is eligible to receive up to two tickets to the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony Simulcast in the Law School Auditorium on a first-come, first-served basis. 
    • You as a graduate do not need a ticket. Children under 2 years do not need a ticket if they will be seated on a ticket holder’s lap during the ceremony. All other guests must have a ticket.

    Special Accommodations

    Accessible seating is available for guests with disabilities and up to two (2) companions. This seating area is designated for individuals using wheelchairs, persons with limited mobility, and guests with visual or hearing impairments. To make arrangements, please submit your request by completing the Guest Accommodation Request Form at Requests for accommodations must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 25.  Limited seating is available.

    Please note: The University does not provide wheelchairs.  Individuals are responsible for bringing their own to all ceremonies.  Please confer with guests in advance about any special needs to avoid having wheelchair-bound guests arrive without wheelchair-accessible seating available.

    Visa Letters for International Guests

    If you will have guests coming to the ceremony from outside of the United States, you may require a letter in support of a visa.  Any JD student requiring a visa letter should email   

    Locker Extension Request

    All graduating students' lockers must be cleaned out on Monday, June 11However, students remaining in Chicago to study for the bar exam or who are working in the Clinics may apply to keep their lockers until Wednesday, August 1. To keep your locker through Wednesday, August 1, please fill out a locker extension request at no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 4

    Graduating Students Dinner

    The Graduating Students Dinner in honor of the Class of 2018 will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at the Law School.  The Graduating Students Dinner is open to all graduating 3L and LLM students.  RSVPs are required and invitations will be sent via email. 

    Please note: The Law School does not accommodate guests at the Graduating Students Dinner.

    Graduating Students Wine Mess

    A special Wine Mess in honor of the Class of 2018 will be held at the Law School the afternoon of Friday, June 8, 2018 from 3:15 - 5:00 p.m.

    • Friends, family members, and guests are all invited to attend.
    • If weather permits, the Wine Mess will be held outside by the fountain.  In the event of rain, the Wine Mess will be held in the Green Lounge.

    Sign Up for the Graduating Students Committee

    The Graduating Students Committee is a group of graduating 3Ls and LLMs who facilitate the faculty awards for the Graduating Students Dinner and the faculty hooders for the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony.  Additionally, the committee puts together the Class of 2018 Slide Show which is played during the dinner. All graduating students interested in serving on the committee can sign up at  The deadline to sign up is 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 9. (DEADLINE PASSED)

    Submit Diploma Name Changes 

    If your current name of record (check via the student portal at is not what you want in your diploma, submit a name change now.  The deadline to submit a name change is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 16.  Note that the way your name appears on your diploma is the way it will be read at graduation.  See (DEADLINE PASSED)

    Sign Up for Class Composite Photos

    You’ve probably seen the composite photos for previous classes hanging around the Law School.  Now it’s your turn.  Each graduating 3L and LLM is photographed and included in the class composite at no charge.  Students have the option to purchase copies of their headshot and copies of the class composite.

    The Law School graduation photographer (Wyckoff-Tweedie) will be on site to take composite photos from February 13-23. Students who do not have their photo taken by Wyckoff-Tweedie will not be pictured in the class composite.  Most students wear a suit jacket and shirt for the headshot photo.
