JD candidates wear a maroon robe with black velvet stripes and a black velvet tam. Graduates also will receive an academic hood at the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony. The academic hood is a gift from the Law School, so graduates should not rent one.
JD candidates may rent graduation attire in one of the following ways:
- Going to www.oakhalli.com/UniversityofChicago.
- Going to the University of Chicago Bookstore and asking at the front desk about ordering a tam and robe. Orders must be placed by May 26, 2017. *Please note that the Oak Hall ordering website lists the deadline to order as May 13 but that is for online orders only. You can order your attire at the bookstrore until May 26.
The cost is $65. Please be advised that after May 26, 2017 there will be no refunds for cancelled orders.
In addition, graduates will receive an academic attire rental card in the mail with other graduation information, which should be mailed out to all graduates by the University Registrar during the 5th week of the Spring Quarter, or around May 1. Graduates who do not receive a card by May 12 should contact the Bookstore at 773.702.7712.
Tams and robes will be available for pickup at the University of Chicago Bookstore (Barnes and Noble) located at 970 E. 58th St. (on the second floor) during the following times:

LLM candidates wear a black robe (no velvet stripes) and a black mortarboard cap. LLM candidates can purchase academic attire from the University bookstore for $52 between April 3 and June 2. LLMs are strongly encouraged to purchase their attire as soon as possible to ensure size availability and avoid long lines. LLM students will be able to keep the robe and mortarboard as keepsakes. LLM graduates also will receive a hood at the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony as a gift from the Law School.
Graduates with additional questions regarding renting or purchasing graduation attire should contact Erin Sedona Smith at email@example.com and put “Law School Regalia Question” in the subject line.
No adornment of any kind can be worn outside the robe or on the cap.
The University Marshals reserve the right to prevent graduates from marching if they do not adhere to academic attire restrictions.
Please contact Balfour, (800) 433-0296, to order graduation announcements. Graduates also can order announcements online at www.CBgrad.com.
Candidates who need special accommodations (early access, special seating, special parking, etc.) for themselves or their guests should submit the request using the online form here by Friday, May 26, 2017. In the form, please clearly indicate whether the accommodations requested are for the 530th University Convocation on Saturday morning, the Law School’s Diploma & Hooding Ceremony, or both. Graduates with questions after submitting the form should contact the convocation staff at (773)702-2513 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
