Preparing for Graduation
Apply for Graduation
Degree candidates participating in the University Convocation and the Law School's Diploma & Hooding Ceremony must have successfully satisfied all curriculum requirements and passed all examinations. In addition, all degree candidates must complete an online degree application through my.uchicago.edu by Friday March 30, 2018. The deadline is set by the University Office of the Registrar and no exceptions will be made.
Submit Diploma Name Changes
If your current name of record (check via the student portal at my.uchicago.edu) is not what you want in your diploma, submit a name change now. The deadline to submit a name change is Friday, February 16, 2018. Note that the way your name appears on your diploma is the way it will be read at graduation. See http://registrar.uchicago.edu/addressnamechanges.
Sign Up for the Graduating Students Committee
The Graduating Students Committee is a group of graduating 3Ls and LLMs who facilitate the faculty awards for the Graduating Students Dinner and the faculty hooders for the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony. Additionally, the committee puts together the Class of 2018 Slide Show which is played during the dinner. All graduating students interested in serving on the committee can sign up at https://www.law.uchicago.edu/GSC. The deadline to sign up is Thursday, February 9, 2018.
Sign Up for Class Composite Photos
You’ve probably seen the composite photos for previous classes hanging around the Law School. Now it’s your turn. Each graduating 3L and LLM is photographed and included in the class composite at no charge. Students have the option to purchase copies of their headshot and copies of the class composite.
The Law School graduation photographer (Wyckoff-Tweedie) will be on site to take composite photos from February 13-23. Students who do not have their photo taken by Wyckoff-Tweedie will not be pictured in the class composite. Most students wear a suit jacket and shirt for the headshot photo.
Students can sign up for appointments at https://goo.gl/3Bnd38. Please be aware that these are the only dates the photographers will be at the Law School.

JD candidates wear a maroon robe with black velvet stripes and a black velvet tam. Graduates will receive an academic hood at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony. The academic hood is a gift from the Law School and graduates do not need to rent a hood.
JD candidates may rent graduation attire in one of the following ways:

- Visit the University of Chicago Barnes & Noble Bookstore (970 E. 58th Street) and place an order in person
Graduation attire orders must be placed by May 25, 2018 and no cancelled orders will be accepted after this time.
In addition, graduates will receive an academic attire rental card in the mail with other graduation information, which should be mailed out to all graduates by the University Registrar during the 5th week of the Spring Quarter, or around May 1. Graduates who do not receive a card by May 11 should contact the Bookstore at 773.702.7712.

LLM candidates wear a black robe (no velvet stripes) and a black mortarboard cap. LLM candidates can purchase academic attire from the University of Chicago Barnes & Noble Bookstore (970 E. 58th Street) between April 2 and June 1. LLMs are strongly encouraged to purchase their attire as soon as possible to ensure size availability and avoid long lines. LLM students will be able to keep the robe and mortarboard as keepsakes. LLM graduates also will receive a hood at the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony as a gift from the Law School.
Graduates with additional questions regarding renting or purchasing graduation attire should contact Erin Sedona Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org and put “Law School Regalia Question” in the subject line.
No adornment of any kind can be worn outside the robe or on the cap. The University Marshals reserve the right to prevent graduates from marching if they do not adhere to academic attire restrictions.
Hints for Dressing
Most men wear shirts and ties under their robes. (Don't wear a jacket because it is usually very hot. Those gradautes wishing to wear a jacket for the reception should have a guest carry the jacket.) Most wear dark dress pants or khakis and dress shoes or loafers. Most women wear dresses or pants with pumps or sandals. Please keep in mind that these robes are very hot and most years it manages to get into the 90s. Most guests wear business or business casual attire.
Accessible seating is available for guests with disabilities and up to two (2) companions. This seating area is designated for individuals using wheelchairs, persons with limited mobility, and guests with visual or hearing impairments. To make arrangements, please submit your request by completing the Guest Accommodation Request Form. Requests for accommodations must be submitted by Friday, May 25, 2018.
