Preparing for Graduation

Marching Requirements

Degree candidates participating in the University Convocation and the Law School's Diploma and Hooding Ceremony must have successfully satisfied all curriculum requirements and passed all examinations.  In addition, all degree candidates must complete an online degree application through by Friday March 31, the deadline set by the University Office of the Registrar. No exceptions will be made.

Graduating Students Committee

The Graduating Students Committee is involved in planning the Graduating Students Dinner, selecting the faculty hooders and award recipients, and coordinating the fundraising for the Class Gift.

Tickets are not required for the University Convocation Ceremony. 

Each marching Law School graduate will receive up to four tickets for the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony in Rockefeller Chapel. Guests must have tickets to attend the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony.

Tickets are not required for the simulcast of the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony in the Law School Auditorium.

Academic Attire

The University policy on academic dress is as follows:

A degree candidate wears the robe and cap appropriate for the degree he or she is to receive at Convocation, regardless of any previous degrees received. 

JD candidates wear a maroon robe with black velvet stripes and a black velvet tam.  Graduates also will receive an academic hood at the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony.  The academic hood is a gift from the Law School, so graduates should not rent one.   

JD candidates may rent graduation attire in one of the following ways:

  • Going to
  • Going to the University of Chicago Bookstore and asking at the front desk about ordering a tam and robe.  Orders must be placed by May 26, 2017. *Please note that the Oak Hall ordering website lists the deadline to order as May 13 but that is for online orders only.  You can order your attire at the bookstrore until May 26. 

The cost is $65. Please be advised that after May 26, 2017 there will be no refunds for cancelled orders.

In addition, graduates will receive an academic attire rental card in the mail with other graduation information, which should be mailed out to all graduates by the University Registrar during the 5th week of the Spring Quarter, or around May 1.  Graduates who do not receive a card by May 12 should contact the Bookstore at 773.702.7712.

Tams and robes will be available for pickup at the University of Chicago Bookstore (Barnes and Noble) located at 970 E. 58th St. (on the second floor) during the following times:

Wednesday, June 7:     8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 8:         8:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m.
Friday, June 9:              8:00 a.m.- 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 10:        Beginning at 7:00 a.m.

Tams and robes must be returned to the University of Chicago Bookstore immediately following the Diploma & Hooding Ceremony.  A late fee of $20.00 will be assessed for all gowns returned after June 12th at 6:00 p.m.

LLM candidates wear a black robe (no velvet stripes) and a black mortarboard cap.  LLM candidates can purchase academic attire from the University bookstore for $52 between April 3 and June 2.  LLMs are strongly encouraged to purchase their attire as soon as possible to ensure size availability and avoid long lines.  LLM students will be able to keep the robe and mortarboard as keepsakes. LLM graduates also will receive a hood at the Diploma and Hooding Ceremony as a gift from the Law School.

Graduates with additional questions regarding renting or purchasing graduation attire should contact Erin Sedona Smith at and put “Law School Regalia Question” in the subject line.

No adornment of any kind can be worn outside the robe or on the cap.
The University Marshals reserve the right to prevent graduates from marching if they do not adhere to academic attire restrictions.

Special Accommodations

Candidates who need special accommodations (early access, special seating, special parking, etc.) for themselves or their guests should submit the request using the online form here by Friday, May 26, 2017.  In the form, please clearly indicate whether the accommodations requested are for the 530th University Convocation on Saturday morning, the Law School’s Diploma & Hooding Ceremony, or both.  Graduates with questions after submitting the form should contact the convocation staff at (773)702-2513 or e-mail 

Please note: The University does not provide wheelchairs.  Individuals are responsible for bringing their own.  Please confer with guests in advance about any special needs to avoid having wheelchair-bound guests arrive without wheelchair-accessible seating available.   

Graduating Students Dinner

The Graduating Students Dinner (for 3Ls and LLMs) will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at the Law School.  The Graduating Students Dinner is open to all graduating students.  RSVPs are required.  Students will be notified when the RSVP opens for the event.

**Please note that the Law School does not accommodate guests at the Graduating Students Dinner.


The examination period for 3Ls and LLMs runs from May 23 to May 27.

Bar exam prep courses usually begin on the Tuesday after Memorial Day, but some may start during the exam period.  Please note that exams cannot be moved because they conflict with bar exam prep courses.
