The Record, Fall 2023
Message from the Dean
Dear Alumni and Friends,
At his inauguration two years ago, President Paul Alivisatos described the University of Chicago as an “engaged university,” where the consequences of research and learning reach beyond our walls. The Law School, as a professional school within our great research university, exemplifies this distinctively Chicago characteristic. Our faculty’s scholarship and ideas exert influence locally, nationally, and globally. Our students learn through exquisite teaching in our classrooms, as well as in ways that connect directly to the world, such as clinics and thousands of pro bono public-service hours. While the University of Chicago always celebrates learning for its own sake, the Law School is also a hub of activity that influences law and society.
This issue of The Record profiles several ways in which the ideas and expertise of our outstanding faculty extend beyond the classroom. Three faculty members—Professors Will Baude, Allison LaCroix, and David Strauss—were tapped to serve on a bipartisan presidential commission tasked with examining potential reforms to the US Supreme Court. Also, Professor Curtis Bradley coauthored a law review article that led to the passage of a federal law imposing new transparency requirements for executive agreements. Professor Eric Posner just completed a year of service as counsel for the US Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division. These examples make it accurate to say that the ideas of our professors are shaping the law.
Often our students develop their lawyering skills while engaged with the wider world. This past year, a student and an alumna won the University’s venture challenges for entrepreneurship in the profit and non-profit sectors, respectively. Through our law clinics, our students have been involved in representing clients and, in some cases, creating important precedents. The Jenner & Block Supreme Court and Appellate Clinic, led by Professors David Strauss and Sarah Konsky, served as co-counsel for three Indian tribes in a case before the US Supreme Court. With the help of our law students, the Clinic secured a victory for its clients and a landmark interpretation of the Indian Child Welfare Act. The Federal Criminal Justice Clinic recently issued a much-discussed report on pretrial detention and bail in the federal criminal system, and in these pages, a student reflects the learning experience of participating in that report.
Engagement implies mutual interactions, and often the world has an impact on the Law School. Our alumni are most often the source of this impact, through their dedication of time and effort and their generous philanthropy. An extraordinary example is the gifts of Pavel Malyi, LLM ’95, who created scholarships for LLM students and endowed the Malyi Center for the Study of Institutional and Legal Integrity. This new center, led by Professor Tom Ginsburg, advances research on the sources of sound institutions, their consequences, and the conditions of their endurance. The generosity of these gifts illustrates how the brilliance of our faculty’s ideas may foster a virtuous circle in which the world supports more path-breaking faculty thinking.
These are, of course, just a handful of examples of how ideas and learning at the Law School engage our world. As we begin another academic year together, I look forward to the growing influence of Chicago thinking and your continued engagement with our Law School.
Wishing you all a happy, healthy, and safe autumn.
Warm regards,
Thomas J. Miles

A message from the Associate Dean for External Affairs
Greetings, Alumni and Friends!
During my eight years at the Law School across a variety of roles, I have enjoyed meeting hundreds—if not thousands—of members of our alumni community. I was excited to take on a new leadership role as Associate Dean for External Affairs earlier this year, and look forward to engaging with many more of you and continuing our work supporting the people and programs that make the Law School as special today as when you experienced it as a student. Your enthusiasm, generosity, and dedication to the institution is truly exceptional and inspiring.
I want to also thank the more than 3,500 alumni and friends who made a gift during the 2022–2023 fiscal year. The Law School’s commitment to intellectual and creative inquiry would not be possible without this loyal group of donors. These annual gifts help us to recruit and retain world-class faculty, fund much-needed scholarships, underwrite student services and activities, and strengthen our legal clinics and programmatic initiatives.
Thank you for your continuing support and confidence in the future of the University of Chicago Law School.
Warmest regards,
Alexander D. Steele
Associate Dean for External Affairs

A Reunion Weekend to Remember
This past spring, we hosted more than 700 alumni and guests who attended more than twenty events at the Law School and at various locations downtown over reunion weekend. Highlights from those three days included eleven class dinners, several faculty master classes taught by current professors (with three of the faculty celebrating their own Law School Reunions), and a Fireside Chat hosted by Dean Thomas Miles featuring Reunion celebrants David Rubenstein, ’73, cofounder of The Carlyle Group and current Chair of the University’s Board of Trustees, along with Adam Silver, ’88, NBA Commissioner.
Reunion celebrants raised over $3.5M for the Law School. Thank you again to everyone who made Reunion 2023 a success; we are excited to celebrate in 2024!
Congratulations, Class of 2023!
Thank you to the Class of 2023, who achieved 60% participation through their Class Gift Campaign! Combined with the generous support of the Wolf Family Challenge Match, the effort raised more than $29,000 for the Law School Annual Fund, student organizations, and the clinics. A special congratulations to the LLM class, which achieved 100% participation with all members contributing!
