Tom Ginsburg Co-Authors Article Calling on Higher-Ed Institutions Not to Trade Autonomy for Federal Funds

A Compact for Control

In an opinion piece for Inside Higher Ed co-authored with Yale Law Professor Robert Post, Tom Ginsburg, the Leo Spitz Distinguished Service Professor of International Law and faculty director of the University's Forum for Free Inquiry and Expression, urges universities not to strike deals with the Trump Administration in order to free their federal funds.

“Holding hostage federal loans and grants, the “compact” is essentially a unilateral executive decree that cannot be refused,” the professors write. “Although it sounds in high and unobjectionable ideals, it is in fact designed to undermine the traditional academic independence and freedom that have sustained the greatness of American universities. The compact should be immediately and forcefully rejected by all self-respecting institutions of higher education.”
