Goodwin H. Liu is an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court who has served since he was elected in 2011. In addition to serving on the highest court in the State of California, Justice Liu also has experience as a constitutional law professor, a Special Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, and a litigator at O’Melveny & Myers. In 2017, Justice Liu published a study on Asian American representation in the legal field titled “A Portrait of Asian Americans in the Law.” The Portrait Project is currently in its next phase, which will take a deeper dive into the empirical reasons and potential solutions to the challenges faced by Asian Americans in the legal community. APALSA invites the law school community to hear Justice Liu speak on his rich experiences along the path to the California judiciary as well as the state of diversity in the legal profession. This event will occur in hybrid format and will not be recorded.

This convening is open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.

This is a mask-optional convening. We strongly encourage unvaccinated individuals and those preferring to wear masks to do so.
