Crimmigration: Examining the State of Affairs in U.S. Immigration Enforcement

2/26

Open to the public

This lunch talk on immigration enforcement, sponsored by the Immigration Law Society and ACLU student organizations, will be moderated by Dean Thomas Miles and feature additional speakers Professor Geoffrey Heeren from Valparaiso University Law School, Professor Daniel Morales from DePaul University College of Law, and National Litigation Coordinator Mark Fleming from National Immigrant Justice Center. Lunch from Snail Thai will be provided and attendance is free and open to the public.

Dean Miles will moderate the event and also discuss his own research on immigration enforcement.

Professor Heeren will discuss the use of work restrictions as a tool of immigration enforcement; the United States v. Texas case at the Supreme Court; the minimal federal regulation of immigrant work up until the 1980s; and the largely forgotten jurisprudence from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century upholding immigrants' "right to work."

Professor Morales will discuss the history of immigration and the ethos of unconditional membership; the possibilities for increased federalism in U.S. immigration: and the role of sanctuary cities.

Mark Fleming will discuss  legal challenges to ICE’s use of immigration detainers and notifications; potential future legal challenges to ICE’s interior enforcement strategies; and the origins of and differences in the various new generation sanctuary laws.
