Harmela Anteneh, ’26, has had a busy summer. A Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Scholar, she split her time working in Disney’s in-house legal department and working as a summer associate at Paul Hastings in Los Angeles.

How did you connect with your opportunity at Paul Hastings?

This is my second summer at Paul Hastings. Last year, I found the opportunity through Symplicity. After that, I was given a return offer to come back to the firm.

How does your experience connect with what you currently envision doing with your law degree?

This experience is giving me broad exposure to various practice areas while allowing me to connect with attorneys who have pursued diverse and inspiring paths. It’s helping me clarify what I want from my legal career and how I can make an impact.

Please describe a “typical” day at work.

After getting settled in my office, I’ll usually go on a coffee run with the junior associates and the other summer associates. Afterward, I’ll start working on a research or writing assignment. If there’s no scheduled lunch event, I’ll grab lunch with other associates nearby. The afternoon is usually spent wrapping up assignments or joining team meetings. We have summer events once a week such as attending a basketball game or going to Top Golf.

What is something you learned or experienced that was surprising or particularly compelling during this summer position?

Participating in a mock deposition was a highlight. I found it both exciting and educational. It confirmed my interest in litigation and made me eager to build those advocacy skills further.

What are a couple of your key takeaways from the experience so far?

First: Responsiveness and flexibility are key to being a good lawyer. Law is a service industry, and you must be prepared to be available for your client and adaptable to their changing needs.

Second: Your unique background and interests are assets. Clients connect with authenticity, so leaning into your identity strengthens your ability to build trust and be effective.

What advice would you offer another law student contemplating working in a similar position next summer?

Be yourself! Be authentic throughout the process. The best firm for you is one where you feel valued, supported, and inspired to grow. You’ll thrive in an environment that genuinely embraces who you are.

How are you spending your free time this summer?

I’m spending quality time with family, taking dance classes, and enjoying some well-deserved shopping sprees!

What are you most looking forward to in returning to UChicago Law this fall?

As a 3L, I’ll get to take classes that are more specific and unique to my interests and long-term goals.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity. It's truly remarkable how much I’ve been able to grow and learn. The mentorship I’ve received has been invaluable, and I’m excited to continue developing into the kind of lawyer I aspire to be.
