An etching of Adam Chilton.

Dear Friends,

It is a privilege to share with you this first issue of The Record since I became dean last July. In the past few months, I’ve been excited to spend time with the amazing alumni, faculty, and students who make our law school community so special. This issue highlights some of the exceptional work being done by each of those groups.

Our alumni continue to demonstrate how a UChicago Law education prepares graduates to lead in a changing world. You will read about their pioneering role in shaping the cryptocurrency industry, and you will meet Richard Robbins, ’91, who has taken on the new role of director of Applied AI at a major Chicago law firm. These stories illustrate how our alumni are seizing opportunities and setting standards in emerging fields.

Our faculty continues to be arguably the most accomplished group of legal scholars in the country. In “The Corporate Speech Dilemma,” six of my colleagues offer diverse perspectives on a complex question, exemplifying our tradition of open debate. In “Theory in Practice,” you’ll see how Professor Samuel Bray’s scholarship on global injunctions influenced the US Supreme Court, how Professor John Rappaport has reimagined the teaching of criminal law, and how our faculty are incorporating artificial intelligence into the classroom to prepare students for the legal challenges of tomorrow.

Our students bring equal energy and promise. This fall we welcomed one of the most impressive classes in our history—talented 1Ls who join us with record-breaking credentials and remarkable life experiences. A new fellows program will pair them with upper-year mentors to support their first year, while traditions like Café D’Angelo continue to enrich their daily lives.

Together, these stories capture what excites me most about the Law School today: a community that embraces both tradition and innovation, intellectual rigor and personal connection. I look forward to meeting many of you in the months ahead and to hearing your ideas about how we can continue to strengthen this remarkable institution.

With gratitude and warm regards,
