Noah Blake Smith became curious about the study of law after working as a research assistant—analyzing the real-world impact of public policy—at his alma mater, Georgetown University, where he majored in economics and minored in mathematics. He hails from Philadelphia.

Tell us a bit about your background and professional path.

I developed a marked interest in econometrics and public policy analysis in college. So, after graduating, I worked at an economic consulting firm, modeling damages in complex commercial litigation. This experience led me to co-found a legal technology startup, which uses artificial intelligence to predict litigation outcomes.

What key experiences do you feel have shaped you?

My experience as an econometrics research assistant has been vital to my professional development. Working with Professor Nada Eissa at Georgetown University, I have studied the socioeconomic effects of public policy using sophisticated statistical models. This wide-ranging research exposed me to the real-world impact of policymaking, spurring my interest in the law.

What motivated your decision to go to law school?

Given my varied interests, I think law school will help me identify the career path I want to pursue. Whatever that may be, I anticipate a formal legal education will help me build the skills and knowledge to succeed in a career at the intersection of law and business.

Why did you choose the University of Chicago Law School?

I was drawn to the Doctoroff Business Leadership Program on account of my interest in the business side of law. The Law School’s preeminence in law and economics likewise attracted me, given my academic background.

What do you hope/plan to do with your legal education?

I aspire to become a leader at the intersection of law, business, and technology—in whatever form that may manifest.

What are you most looking forward to about being a law student?

I am most excited to connect with faculty and classmates!

Any interesting hobbies or interests?

I enjoy cooking meats in cast iron skillets and listening to podcasts about politics and current events.

What is a “fun fact” about you?

I taught myself to code in five programming languages.
