Geoffrey Stone's Perilous Times Earns Honors
Perilous Times: Free Speech in Wartime from the Sedition Act of 1798 to the War on Terrorism (2004), the most recent book by Geoffrey Stone, will receive the 2005 Scribes Award for the Best Book of the Year in Law. Since 1961, Scribes, the American Society of Writers on Legal Subjects, has presented an annual award for the best work of legal scholarship published during the previous year. The Scribes Book Award Committee receives between 30 and 40 nominees each year. The Scribes Book Award is presented at the Scribes luncheon, during the ABA annual meeting. The award will be given at the American Bar Association convention next month.
Perilous Times has already been honored by several organizations. It received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award for 2005, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for 2004 as the Best Book in History, and was a Finalist for the American Bar Association's 2005 Silver Gavel Award. It was also hailed as among the most notable books of 2004 by the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Christian Science Monitor.
Geoffrey Stone is the Harry Kalven, Jr. Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School.
