Special Counsel Robert Mueller leaves no doubt why Americans, including a President Donald Trump loathe to sound critical of Vladimir Putin, should be outraged over Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

As Trump was tweeting claims of vindication from Mar-a-Lago, Mueller had unwittingly reminded one of what might be a legitimate Russian defense if his indictments improbably result in an actual trial of Russia-based miscreants: the First Amendment.
