Push for community oversight of the Police Department back in City Hall spotlight

Legislation that would put an elected board of Chicago residents in charge of the Chicago Police Department is once again in the spotlight at City Hall, with negotiations underway that could lead to a vote as soon as next month.


Craig Futterman, a University of Chicago law professor, said Chicago was at an “historic moment to get things right.”

Robust community oversight could reverse “decades of pain” and save the city millions of dollars it now shells out to settle police misconduct cases, Futterman said.
