Come hear Frederick R. Yarger, '07, discuss Public Interest Appellate Law Careers, as well as other career development issues, the work of state AG offices, and past litigation and legal issues.

Fred is an experienced appellate advocate, with experience in both government and private practice.  Colorado Attorney General Cynthia H. Coffman appointed Fred Yarger as Solicitor General of Colorado in April 2015. From 2012 through 2013, Yarger had been the Assistant Solicitor General for the Office of the Attorney General, working directly with former Solicitor General Daniel D. Domenico to oversee the office’s appellate and constitutional practice. Yarger was previously a lawyer with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, an international litigation firm with particular expertise in appellate matters. Earlier in his career, he served as judicial law clerk to the Honorable Mark Filip of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and to the Honorable Timothy Tymkovich of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.

Next month, Yarger will be arguing Masterpiece Cakeshop, Ltd.  v. the Colorado Human Rights Commission in the United States Supreme Court.  The question presented in this high-profile case is whether Colorado's public accommodations law to compel the petitioner to create expression that violates his sincerely held religious beliefs about marriage violates the free speech or free exercise clauses of the First Amendment. Yarger is counsel of record for the Respondent, the Colorado Human Rights Commission.
