On February 8^th at 4 pm EST, join us for the book launch of “Impeachment in a Global Context: Law, Politics, and Comparative Practice”, which brings together a panel of leading scholars who have contributed to an important new global comparative study that explores impeachment through the lenses of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.  Illustrating the range of issues and countries examined in the book, the topics covered by the panel will include: how impeachment provides a political safeguard against human rights violations, but also needs constraints on its use; how impeachment of judges in The Philippines became a tool for consolidating strongman rule; the argument for revival of impeachment in the United Kingdom, where it originated, as a way to improve the accountability of the executive and enhance genuine democratic oversight; and whether the more important role of impeachment is to serve as an exit from the deep structural crises that presidential systems of government sometimes undergo.
