Founded in 1993, Neighbors is the Law School’s primary community service organization. The group runs a weekly Middle School Leadership Program through an after-school program for students in the community, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, as well as a one-on-one mentoring program that matches “off-track” students with law student mentors over the course of the school year. These programs aim to help the students develop their leadership skills and connect them with law students to foster positive relationships. At the Kenwood Academy, Neighbors members aid high school students to prepare their applications for the Gates scholarship and provide one-on-one tutoring. Each spring, the group organizes a Service Day, which encourages law students throughout Chicago to participate in a day of community service at a number of local organizations. Overall, Neighbors provides University of Chicago law students the opportunity to give back to the local community.
