Also on the itinerary: a visit to the Supreme Court of the Province of Buenos Aires and an opportunity to meet Justice Daniel Soria.

At Marval, O’Farrel and Mairal, an Argentine law firm, students learned about Argentina’s legal system.

They also met Dean Monica Pinto of the University of Buenos Aires.

Another group of students traveled to Japan to focus on constitutionalism, legal reform, and minorities' rights.

The students, accompanied by Deputy Dean Tom Ginsburg, the Leo Spitz Professor of International Law, passed by the Tokyo Imperial Palace en route to visiting the Japanese Supreme Court.

The group gathered for a photo after a discussion of the Japanese governmental compensation program established after the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

Students also enjoyed an izakaya lunch with Kokugakuin University Law School Professor Satoru Shinomiya at Shinjuku Kakekomi Gyoza, a restaurant noteworthy for its employment of stigmatized former prison inmates.

As part of the Law School's Spring Break of Service progam, this group worked at the Orleans Public Defenders Office in New Orleans. They spent the week shadowing and assisting individual attorneys. Their tasks included listening to jail calls, interviewing clients, and going to court.

These students spent their week at the Louisiana Capital Defense Center, a non-profit law office committed to providing quality legal representation to people facing the death penalty in Louisiana and other parts of America's South.

At the Metro Public Defender's Office in Nashville, students helped with the Defend Nashville Campaign. The campaign is geared toward improving defense services and public perception of the defender's office. Students shadowed attorneys in court, visited the jail, and conducted interviews with past and current clients.

In Knoxville, students were able to sit in on court sessions and have a discussion with the Honorable Tim Irwin. Judge Irwin played in the NFL for 14 years before practicing law full time.

In Minnesota, one group worked at the Ramsey County Public Defender's Office in Saint Paul, where they wrote memos on local traffic law violations and certain procedural issues in extradition. The other Minnesota group worked at the Center on Crime and Justice in Minneapolis, where they researched the expungement of criminal records, helped with strategy for an appellate expungement case, and reviewed a case for a client hoping for exoneration.
