Alana Frederick

Lecturer in Law

Alana Frederick serves as the career law clerk and chief of staff to Judge Kevin Newsom on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit.  Alana also teaches and lectures regularly at various law schools, including Yale Law School, Stanford Law School, and Harvard Law School.  Her work has been published in the Harvard Law Review, and (forthcoming 2026) the Yale Law Journal.  She is an elected member of the American Law Institute. 

Alana graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the Honors College at the University of Alabama.  She then matriculated to the University of Alabama School of Law, where she graduated cum laude and earned nine best-paper prizes.  Following law school, Alana clerked for Justice Michael Bolin of the Supreme Court of Alabama and then practiced law at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, LLP.

Alana resides in Birmingham, Alabama, with her husband, Scott, and her two daughters, Evelyn and Kirklyn.  She is deeply involved in her local community, where she currently serves on the Boards of Directors for the Junior League of Birmingham, the Nature Conservancy of Alabama, the Service Guild of Birmingham, and the Alabama Theatre, and she is an active member of the Rotary Club of Birmingham and the Birmingham Committee on Foreign Relations.
