The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about an upsurge of racial discrimination and attacks against Asian communities. This webinar is in response to the urgent needs of Asian communities and will focus on identifying ways to respond to racism and bigotry, and mitigate their negative impacts. The webinar will review historical and current contexts of racial discrimination against Asians in the U.S, as well as its individual and social costs.

Presented by Professors Yoonsun Choi, Zhiying Ma and Miwa Yasui, University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration. Hosted by the Dean of Students Office at the Law School and APALSA.

Yoonsun Choi, PhD

Professor, School of Social Service Administration

Yoonsun Choi is a Professor at the School of Social Service Administration. Her fields of special interest include minority youth development; effects of race, ethnicity, and culture in youth development; children of immigrants; Asian American youth; and prevention of youth problem behaviors.

Miwa Yasui, PhD

Associate Professor, School of Social Service Administration

Miwa Yasui is an Associate Professor at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration. Her areas of interest include cultural influences on developmental and familial processes such as ethnic identity development and ethnic-racial socialization, the examination of the culturally responsive assessments and interventions for ethnically diverse children and youth, intervention and prevention of problem behaviors among youth, and observational methodology.

Zhiying Ma, PhD

Assistant Professor, School of Social Service Administration

Zhiying Ma is an Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration, as well as a faculty affiliate of the University's Center for East Asian Studies and Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality. She is a cultural and medical anthropologist and a scholar of disability studies. Her work in general examines how cultural, politico-economic, and technological factors shape the design and implementation of social policies, and how national policies and global development initiatives in turn impact health in/equity, vulnerability, and rights, with a focus on contemporary China.
