Shopify has promoted its general counsel, whose previous roles include working for the Biden administration, Facebook and Jenner & Block LLP, to chief operating officer.

Jessica Hertz made a LinkedIn post about her promotion Thursday. A Shopify spokesperson told Law360 Pulse Thursday that "Jess has spent four years deeply understanding our business and rewiring how we operate, building systems in legal, talent, and across the company that scale. She thinks from first principles, ships smart fixes, and combines public sector and technology experience with proven execution. As COO, she'll help us move faster and deliver more for merchants."

It was not immediately clear if the COO title is in addition to her general counsel duties or a separate position for her, and the Shopify spokesperson did not elaborate. The e-commerce giant is based in Ontario, Canada.

In her announcement on LinkedIn, Hertz said, "I've been here for 4 years and have a clear view of what matters. Winning isn't a trophy. It's something you do repeatedly, by design. Teams that win build better systems ... You move faster, deliver cleaner outcomes, create compounding value."
