Lisa Monaco, ’97, Joins Microsoft as President of Global Affairs

Microsoft Hires Ex-Trump Aide as GC, Ex-Biden Aide as Policy Chief

Microsoft has promoted C.J. Mahoney, a trade official during the first Trump administration, to general counsel, one of several major recent changes in legal leadership at the world’s most valuable company.

The Redmond, Washington-based company also said it has hired Lisa Monaco, who was deputy attorney general in the Biden administration and homeland security adviser in the Obama administration, as president of global affairs.

The appointments come as tech giants attempt to carry out the delicate dance of building strong rapport with both Republicans and Democrats at a time when the two parties share little common ground.

Meta late last year also retooled its global policy leadership, with British politician Nick Clegg, a former leader of the country’s Liberal Democrats, exiting and being succeeded by Joel Kaplan, who was deputy chief of staff under President George W. Bush.

Microsoft said that, as global policy chief, Monaco will be responsible for Microsoft’s interactions with foreign governments and multilateral organizations while also leading its cybersecurity policy and digital crime efforts.
