William Goodwin is Deputy General Counsel, Policy and Regulatory Affairs at Joby Aviation. Prior to Joby, he was Head of Policy, Regulatory, and Legal at Skyryse. Prior to Skyryse, he was the Head of Legal and Policy at AirMap, a start-up powering the future of low altitude-flight, where he managed the legal and policy teams. Prior to AirMap, he was an attorney with Morrison Foerster, an international law firm, and a member of the firm’s UAS/Drone Group, where he counseled clients regarding some of the unique product liability, licensing, and regulatory risks that arise in the drone context. Mr. Goodwin is a frequent speaker on legal and policy issues associated with drones and has advised state legislators, city officials, and university administrators to regarding laws and policies related to UAS. Prior to his legal career, he worked in political network visualization and state and local government consulting. He holds a J.D. from the UCLA School of Law, an M.A. in Political Philosophy from Claremont Graduate University and a B.A. in Classics from the University of Southern California.

Emily Underwood is an Associate Clinical Professor and the Bluhm-Helfand Director of the Innovation Clinic at the University of Chicago Law School. In addition to counseling start-ups and venture capital firms on transactional and regulatory matters in the Innovation Clinic, Underwood serves the George Shultz Innovation Fund, a multi-million dollar fund established from the University’s endowment, as well as its portfolio companies, in structuring investments and managing regulatory and legal issues. She is also one of the supervisors of the Innovation Fund Associates program, an interdisciplinary group of students and post-docs from across all University divisions that aids the George Shultz Innovation Fund by performing due diligence on innovative ventures coming out of the University ecosystem. Underwood also teaches a summer intensive seminar on contract drafting principles. Prior to joining the clinical faculty, Underwood practiced as an associate in the Corporate group of Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP in Chicago, where she focused on sports law and general corporate matters, and prior to that, as an associate in the Insurance and Financial Services Group at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago, where she focused on mergers and acquisitions, structured financing and regulatory matters in the insurance industry. Underwood graduated from the University of Chicago Law School with honors and holds a BA in Finance and Legal Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Madison.

This convening is open to all invitees who are compliant with UChicago vaccination requirements and, because of ongoing health risks, particularly to the unvaccinated, participants are expected to adopt the risk mitigation measures (masking and social distancing, etc.) appropriate to their vaccination status as advised by public health officials or to their individual vulnerabilities as advised by a medical professional. Public convening may not be safe for all and carries a risk for contracting COVID-19, particularly for those unvaccinated. Participants will not know the vaccination status of others and should follow appropriate risk mitigation measures.
