Meta, formerly Facebook, has hired law lecturer Susan Epstein as associate general counsel for civil rights in technology.

Meta said Epstein will focus on instilling civil rights best practices throughout the company with regard to machine learning, virtual and augmented reality and emerging technologies.

Epstein has a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence from Stanford and a law degree from the University of Chicago. On her LinkedIn profile, Epstein says she aims to “proactively identify and address potential issues in the development and use of technologies that especially impact historically marginalized communities,” and help to develop products that “amplify diverse voices and educate about civil rights as well as lead engagement with external technology experts.”

The appointment comes at a time Meta is under intense public scrutiny in the wake of Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen’s disclosures.
