Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Profiles David Bird '02, Who Made Two SCOTUS Appearances in One Month

Just as every peewee football player fantasizes about appearing in the Super Bowl, law students who plan to be litigators dream of representing a client before the U.S. Supreme Court some day.

For most attorneys, that dream never comes true -- according to its website, the Supreme Court receives about 10,000 petitions every year, but typically hears only 75-80 cases.

But at the tender age of 37, David J. Bird, a senior associate for Reed Smith's Pittsburgh-based national appellate practice, appeared twice before the nine Supreme Court justices -- in just one month, November.

"To have them both come up for arguments in the same month is very unusual," said Mr. Bird, who ended up spending much of the month in Washington, D.C., with a welcome break for Thanksgiving to spend with his family at home in Shadyside.
