Paul Steadman '96 Joins DLA Piper's IP Practice

DLA Piper announced today that Paul Steadman and Matthew Satchwell have joined the firm’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice in Chicago as partner and of counsel, respectively.

“Paul is a well-established patent trial lawyer who has successfully tried numerous first-chair cases in front of multiple judicial bodies,” said John Allcock, global co-chair and US chair of DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice. “Coupled with Matt’s strong technical background and trial skills, their collective knowledge will help expand our patent litigation practice in Chicago and globally, particularly given their substantial international practice advising Japanese companies.”

The addition of Steadman and Satchwell continues the expansion of DLA Piper’s Intellectual Property and Technology practice, which includes the recent arrivals of litigator Paul Gupta in New York and global patent lawyer Paul Li in San Francisco.

Steadman works primarily on complex patent, trade secret, trademark, copyright and other IP-related litigation matters. He represents clients in diverse technical fields that handle such areas as high-tech glass, consumer electronics, medical products and auto parts manufacturing. As a litigator, he has been trial counsel to clients in jury trials, before the International Trade Commission investigating Section 337 violations, in federal and state court appeals, in Markman and other evidentiary hearings, in US bankruptcy court, and in mediations and arbitrations.

Previously a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Steadman earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and a B.S. in Material Science Engineering & Economics from Rice University. Earlier in his career, he served as a law clerk to Judge Patrick Higginbotham of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. A frequent author and speaker in Japan, Steadman has been published on US patent litigation and has presented at seminars in Osaka and Tokyo. He is a member of the Japan-America Society of Chicago.
