Manish Shah '98 Recommended by Sen. Kirk for Seat on U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois

A veteran federal prosecutor and son of immigrants from India is headed for the federal bench here.
U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill. announced today that he's recommended the appointment of Manish Shah, chief of the criminal division of the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago, for a seat on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.
Though Mr. Kirk is a Republican, under Senate tradition in Illinois the senator from the party not in control of the White House usually gets to nominate one of every four names sent to the president. Like Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill, Mr. Kirk has his own screening panel and Mr. Shah won the nod from that group, which was chaired by Peter Baugher of Chicago law firm Schopf & Weiss LLP.
Mr. Shah was born in New York and raised in West Hartford, Conn. He attended Stanford University and the University of Chicago Law School and lives in Chicago with his wife, Joanna Grisinger. He joined the U.S. attorney's office shortly after law school, prosecuting violent drug trafficking and public corruption cases. Notable in the latter category was a probe of Chicago's Hired Truck program that led to the conviction of several ranking officials.
Assuming the White House approves, Mr. Shah's name will be submitted to the Senate, where it first would go to the Judiciary Committee, on which Mr. Durbin serves.
