Leslie Bluhm knows a lot of people.
She runs a major Chicago nonprofit, attends parties at the White House and is the daughter of Neil Bluhm, the billionaire Chicago developer.
So it was a surprise that Ms. Bluhm would turn schoolgirl giddy when Chelsea Clinton's people called her people at Chicago Cares, which connects volunteers with service projects.
"I've never met her, just admired her from afar," says Ms. Bluhm, who this week will introduce former President Bill Clinton's daughter at the Chicago Cares Serve-a-Thon, an event that for 20 years has paired teams of volunteers with one-day service projects. Saturday's Serve-a-Thon will have 5,000 participants, including a few hundred organized by Ms. Clinton, whose visit to Chicago coincides with the Clinton Global Initiative taking place here.
"I'm so excited. It's just a tremendous honor," Ms. Bluhm says during a breakfast interview at Tempo in the Gold Coast, where she lives with her husband, David Helfand, co-president of real estate developer Sam Zell's Equity Group Investments. They have two school-age sons and are juggling year-end school activities and the service project.
