After George Floyd’s death, where does Chicago draw the line on police chokeholds?

University of Chicago law professor Craig Futterman, who has long tackled police accountability and excessive force issues, believes risky neck restraints should be completely banned.

“Is there a situation where a chokehold could save your life? Yes, it’s possible,” Futterman said. “Anything is possible. You can always come up with hypothetical.

“There’s a growing consensus they aren’t worth it,” he added. “Particularly when there are lots of other options. It’s not the only deadly force option. Are the costs of allowing those chokeholds worth it when we have a long body of data and experience showing the damage that has been inflicted and that people can be killed?”
