Chris Garrett '00 Appointed to Oregon Court of Appeals

Garrett, a 40-year-old Democrat from Lake Oswego, was named today by Gov. John Kitzhaber to succeed the retiring David Schuman on Feb. 1.

Schuman was a law professor at the University of Oregon and then deputy attorney general, the No. 2 position in the Oregon Department of Justice, when Kitzhaber appointed him to the court in 2001. His second full term will end in 2014.

Garrett would be up for election for a full six-year term in the May 20 primary. Also up in 2014 are Judges Rebecca Duncan and Tim Sercombe, and three new judges Kitzhaber appointed after lawmakers expanded the court earlier this year. They are Joel DeVore, Erin Lagesen and Doug Tookey.

“Chris Garrett has been a vocal and effective advocate for the rule of law and the vitality of Oregon’s courts,” Kitzhaber said in a statement. “He has earned the respect of people from all walks of life for his intellect and ability to find common ground among divergent views. As he joins one of the hardest working appellate courts in the nation, I am confident that he will not lose sight of the pivotal role the law has as it shapes the lives of all Oregonians.”
