Barry Howard, real estate lawyer who tackled complex transactions, dies at 69

Barry Howard, who was considered a giant in real estate legal industry in Philadelphia and spent most of his career with Equus Capital Partners, has died. He was 69.

Mr. Howard’s early career was spent as a partner at Dechert, one of Philadelphia’s most prominent law firms. While at the law firm, one of his clients was Equus Capital Partners, a Newtown Square real estate investment fund and development firm. By 1984, he joined Equus as executive vice president, chief operating officer and principal.

“He was one of the giants in the real estate law profession,” said Arthur P. Pasquarella, executive vice president and COO at Equus. “He was highly sophisticated and there was no transaction too complex that he couldn’t figure out how to structure to protect the interest of investors.”

Mr. Howard was the consummate professional. He had been ill for quite some time and struggled with cancer. As a result, he spent months planning for what he knew was his ultimate fate and his responsibilities were delegated. “He worked through the early afternoon the day he died,” Pasquarella said. “He went home that night and died in his sleep.”
