Anthony Barash '68 Elected to American Law Institute

The American Law Institute (ALI) today announced the names of 68 newly elected members. This diverse group of highly accomplished lawyers, judges, and law professors includes four new international members, along with Americans from 24 states and one U.S. territory. Election of these members raises ALI's total membership to 4,353.

After many years as Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs and General Counsel of Bowater Inc., Anthony H. Barash became the American Bar Association/Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI) Officer in Uzbekistan in May 2003. He led ABA/CEELI's judicial reform project in Uzbekistan. For a year and a half he worked to develop the Uzbeki legal and judicial systems in addition to those of other Central Asian States. The program offered training, workshops and seminars attended by more than 90 percent of the 870 active judges in Uzbekistan, and published a resource book of ethics materials which has been distributed to most of the country's judges.

From 2005 to 2009, Mr. Barash was the director of the ABA’s Center for Pro Bono. In 2010, he was a fellow in Harvard University’s Advanced Leadership Initiative.
