Adam Silver, ’88, Elected Chair of Duke University Board of Trustees

Duke Trustees Elect Silver as Next Chair

During its quarterly meeting and retreat, the Duke University Board of Trustees elected Duke alumnus and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to serve as the board’s next chair, succeeding Laurene Sperling. Silver’s three-year term will begin July 1.

A member of the Board of Trustees since 2015, Silver has served as vice chair and a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees since 2021. He has led the Committee on Honorary Degrees and co-chaired the 2021-2022 steering committee for strategic engagement. In addition, he has been a member of the facilities and environment, human resources and undergraduate education committees, and the strategic task forces on the Next Generation Living and Learning Experience and Climate Change and Sustainability.

In May 2023, Silver delivered the university’s commencement address in Wallace Wade Stadium.

“It is an honor to serve as the next chair of Duke’s Board of Trustees,” Silver said.  “Duke is well-positioned to flourish under the leadership of President Price, and I am excited to continue to work alongside him and my fellow trustees to build on the university’s long track record of success.”

A 1984 Duke graduate, Silver also earned a law degree from the University of Chicago.  He served as a law clerk to Federal District Court Judge Kimba Wood and as an associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore before joining the NBA in 1992.
