Adam Silver, '88: Contract as NBA Commissioner Extended through the 2023-24 Season

With Business Booming, the N.B.A. Extends Adam Silver’s Contract

The N.B.A. on Wednesday awarded a five-year contract extension to Commissioner Adam Silver that will keep him in charge of the league through the 2023-24 season.

Silver succeeded David Stern as commissioner on Feb. 1, 2014, after Silver had served an eight-year stint as Stern’s deputy commissioner.

The contract extension was announced by Larry Tanenbaum of the Toronto Raptors, who is the chairman of the N.B.A. Board of Governors. Silver’s contract was originally set to expire after the 2018-19 season.

The N.B.A. has enjoyed one of its most consistent periods of growth under Silver, fueled largely by a nine-year, $24.1 billion television deal that took effect at the beginning of the 2016-17 season. The league has also established a new attendance record in four successive seasons; 22.1 million fans attended its games in 2017-18.
