Judge Amul Thapar serves on the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. When he was confirmed to his prior seat on the US District Court for the Eastern District of Kentucky, he became the first South Asian Article III judge. Before assuming these positions, he was the US Attorney for the Eastern District of Kentucky. While a US attorney, Judge Thapar was appointed to the Attorney General's Advisory Committee and chaired the Controlled Substances and Asset Forfeiture Subcommittee. Before his appointment as US attorney, he worked as an assistant US attorney in the Southern District of Ohio and the District of Columbia. Judge Thapar also worked for Williams & Connolly in Washington, DC, and Squire Sanders & Dempsey in Cincinnati, Ohio. Between 1994 and 1997, he served as a law clerk to Judge S. Arthur Spiegel on the US District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and for Judge Nathaniel R. Jones on the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley School of Law.
