  • Liisa Thomas, JD '96, Partner, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton

    Liisa Thomas ’96 is the co-chair of Sheppard Mullin’s Privacy &Cybersecurity Group, resident in Chicago and London. Liisa is the author of the definitive treatise on data breach, Thomas on Data Breach: A Practical Guide to Handling Worldwide Data Breach Notifications (Thomson Reuters 2018). She is known as an industry leader in the privacy and data security space, and is viewed as a trusted advisor “keeping clients one step ahead of where they need to be.”

    Liisa was recently recognized as the 2017 Data Protection Lawyer of the Year by Finance Monthly, and the “Best in Data Security Law Services” at Corporate LiveWire’s 2017 Global Awards.  She is currently an adjunct professor in Northwestern University Law School, and has taught privacy courses at several other Chicago-area law schools, including her alma mater, the University of Chicago.

  • Mary Smith, JD ’91, Partner, The VENG Group

    Mary L. Smith, ’91, a partner in the VENG Group, previously served as the chief executive officer of a $6 billion national health care organization.  Ms. Smith’s career spans high-level positions in a publicly-traded company, global law firms, the government, and boards of directors. She has extensive experience in highly-regulated environments, data privacy, corporate governance, and governmental investigations. Ms. Smith served in a senior role at Tyco International (US) Inc., a $40 billion public company, where she managed high-profile corporate governance matters. Ms. Smith has also served on the senior team at the United States Department of Justice and as General Counsel at the Illinois Department of Insurance.


    Ms. Smith is Secretary and a member of the board of directors of the American Bar Association and is a past president of the National Native American Bar Association.  She is a member of the Economic Club of Chicago, the Executives’ Club of Chicago and the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

  • Ted Ullyot, JD ’94, Former General Counsel, Facebook

    Ted Ullyot was General Counsel of Facebook from 2008 to 2013. Now retired, he is an investor and advisor, as well as a frequent speaker on technology and legal issues. Ted spent most of his early career as a lawyer in Washington D.C., including as a law clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia; as a litigation partner in the Washington office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP; and in the administration of President George W. Bush (as a deputy assistant in the White House, and later at the Justice Department as chief of staff to Attorney General Gonzales).


    At other points in his career, Ted served as General Counsel of ESL Investments, Inc.; as General Counsel of AOL Time Warner Europe; as a board member at AutoZone Inc.; and as a partner in the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Ted graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, after doing his undergraduate work at Harvard.
