Judge Stras graduated from the University of Kansas School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Criminal Procedure Edition of the Kansas Law Review. After law school, Judge Stras clerked for The Honorable Melvin Brunetti on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, for the Honorable J. Michael Luttig on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and for Justice Clarence Thomas on the United States Supreme Court.

Judge Stras practiced at Sidley Austin in Washington D.C. At the University of Minnesota Law School, he taught several classes including federal courts, constitutional law, and criminal law.

Judge Stras currently serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. Before serving on the Eighth Circuit, Judge Stras served as an Associate Justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court.
