For most taxpayers, few things are as terrifying as an Internal Revenue Service audit, and it would seem that a neutral algorithm would be the solution to ensuring that the right people are audited. However, Professor Jacob Goldin and his fellow researchers found that, despite using such an algorithm, there was a significant disparity in audit rates along racial lines. For the Spring Quarter Diversity and Inclusion Reading Group, please join us for a discussion with Professor Goldin about this study and the ramifications of these findings.

In preparation for the session, please read the following short articles:

  • Nina E. Olson, “Racial Disparities in IRS Audits,” Tax Notes, January 31, 2023 [URL]
  • Jacob Bogage, “IRS audits Black taxpayers more often than other groups, agency confirms,” The Washington Post, May 16, 2023 [URL]

If you are interested in reading the study itself, you can find it here

This program is sponsored by the D'Angelo Law Library.

Space is limited to the first 20 students to RSVP, lunch will be provided for registered attendees.
