Among the most pressing humanitarian crises that plague the world in 2018 is the mass persecution of the Rohingya community in Myanmar and the subsequent refugee crisis in South Asia. Nearly 700,000 Rohingya living in Myanmar have fled across the border to Bangladesh and into other territories as a result of violence that former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, among others, has deemed ethnic cleansing. Was this crisis preventable? What role did the United States’ action or inaction play? And, most importantly, what can be done now?

Join the IOP as we welcome two distinguished reporters to discuss this crisis:

• Jason Motlagh, author of "Burma in Transition," is a writer, photographer and filmmaker and contributing editor to VQR. He previously served as TIME Magazine’s Kabul correspondent and has reported from more than forty countries.
• Nahal Toosi, author of "The Genocide the US Didn’t See Coming," is a foreign affairs correspondent at POLITICO where she writes about foreign policy and national security. She has previously covered stories on Hmong refugees and militancy-based human displacement in Pakistan.

Both will present their stories before sitting down for a conversation with Claudia M. Flores, assistant clinical professor of law and Director of the International Human Rights Clinic.
