As the central bank of the United States, the Federal Reserve sits at a unique position in the nation’s governance structure. In particular, traditionally, the Fed has maintained relative independence when setting monetary policy. However, at times, this independence has come under assault from political pressure. Most recently, via tweets and more, President Trump has seemingly placed such pressure on the Fed in an apparent attempt to lower interest rates.
