Presenting student organizations: Black Law Students Association

Law Students for the Creative Arts and the Black Law Student Association are inviting acclaimed black and brown spoken word artists to the law school to discuss their experiences with police.

During Criminal Law, University of Chicago 1Ls read case law that deals with various types of police encounters. When the citizen is a person of color, much of the case law touches on racial profiling, deadly force, innate criminality, targeted legislation, and selective enforcement.

This program will remind law students that behind every case, there is a human. In an effort to highlight this humanity, Behind the Page will allow black and brown poets to share their experiences with police to help law students understand the complexity, emotional intensity, and social relevance of police encounters from the black perspective.
