August 2017 On-Campus Interview Program

Second- and third-year J.D. students can be interviewed through our August On-Campus Interview (OCI) Program. This program runs for two weeks (total of seven days) prior to the beginning of our Autumn Quarter, which allows students to interview without any class conflicts. This year's  program will run from August 7 through August 16, 2017. Employers are strongly encouraged to schedule callbacks for our students before September 25, 2017 the first day of Autumn Quarter classes. Fees (see below) are required for registration and participation in this program. Questions about fall on-campus recruiting and fees may be directed to Paul Woo at p-woo1@uchicago.edu or (773) 834-0918.

REGISTRATION OBLIGATIONS: FEES, OCI SURVEYS, AND ON-CAMPUS INTERVIEW POLICIES

2017 On-Campus Interview Program Fees (New!)

Government and public service employers are exempt from all fees. Other employers can expect an invoice in September 2017 containing charges comprised of:

  1. A base single schedule fee of $1,500
  2. Extra schedule fee(s) of $1,000 per additional schedule, as applicable

You are cordially invited to participate in our August 2017 On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Program, August 7-16, 2017. All Interviews will be conducted at the Law School: 1111 East 60th Street. Details about Procedures and Policies can be found on the Law School's Web site at: http://www.law.uchicago.edu/employers/fallOCI.

We use an interview date assignment system that takes into account your past interview date history and geographic location (national law firms, California law firms, and law firms in New York, D.C., and Chicago are rotated).

The Law School does not permit pre-screening. Interview schedules are filled through a computer driven student bid lottery. You only will have access to student resumes once the scheduler has been run. If you are interested in other student application materials, you may indicate this in the Registration Form under the "Additional Interview Documents" text box and request that students on the schedule bring them to the interview (see "To Register" below)

Please note that our On-Campus Interview Fees have changed this year (first revision in over ten years):

PROGRAM FEES (NEW!)

Government and public service employers are exempt from all fees. Other employers can expect a fall invoice in containing charges comprised of:

  1. A base single schedule fee of $1,500
  2. Extra schedule fee(s) of $1,000 per additional schedule, as applicable

There is no registration fee. Participants will be invoiced in September. No charges are due at this time.

TO REGISTER

Login to your University of Chicago Laws School Symplicity account (https://law-uchicago-csm.symplicity.com/employers/). If you are not in our system, or if you have login issues, please contact Paul Woo at 773-834-0918 or p-woo1@uchicago.edu for assistance.

Proceed to On-Campus Recruiting (left page index). If your organization attended our August OCI program last year, you will be directed to the OCI Registration page after you complete two surveys designed to tell us about our students' involvement in your 2016 Employer Summer Associate Program and our 2016 August OCI Program.

Use the "Position Description" text box to include information about your practice area strengths. Patent practice groups should indicate whether the science, technology, or engineering undergraduate degree is a hard or soft requirement.

Use the "Additional Interview Documents" text box to list other application documents that students should bring to the interview.

You may return to your Registration Form before the Registration period ends (April 7) or after confirmations are sent (week of May 15) to edit information. It would be extremely helpful to tell us who will be representing your organization when that becomes available to you this summer.

Complete the Registration form and hit submit.

LUNCH SPONSORS

Employers might think about sponsoring a student lunch on their interview day. The $5,000 cost for this opportunity is aligned with the Law School's External Affairs Chicago Law Partners Program, and they assist the employer in setting up and catering this lunch. In the case of competing sponsors, a lottery system will be used to determine who gets to sponsor. To advise us of your willingness to sponsor lunch, indicate this in the "Additional Interview Documents" text box on the OCI Registration form. If a lottery is necessary, it will be conducted after interview dates are confirmed and the winning sponsors will be contacted.

CAN'T ATTEND?

If you cannot join us this August, or if you have a sister office(s) who will not be represented during your OCI visit, please consider placing a job posting directed to 2L and/or 3L law students on our Job Posting board via your Symplicity account. Given our small class size, most firms find that direct email responses from interested students works quite well. There is also an option for students to respond only to the posting, and you can accumulate and view those responses on an ad hoc basis. There is no cost for this service.

TO ASSIST YOU

Feel free to contact Paul Woo, Director of Career Services (773-834-0918 or p-woo1@uchicago.edu) with any questions you might have. Thank you for your attention and consideration.

Participants will be invoiced in September. No charges are due at this time: there is no registration fee.

OCI Surveys

Employers who recruited on-campus during the August 2016 OCI program must submit a completed On-Campus Interviewing Survey and a Summer 2016 Associate Offer Survey as part of the registration process for the August 2017 OCI program. The surveys may be found on each employer's Symplicity account under "On-Campus Recruiting."

On-Campus Employer Interview Policies
Registering, on-line or otherwise, and participating in our Fall On Campus Interview Program obligates your agreement to the following Law School policies.

  • Student Prescreening and Interview Selection
It is the University of Chicago Law Schools’ policy not to permit the prescreening of student resumes for the purpose of on-campus interviewing. You are obliged to interview students who were successfully scheduled during the computerized bidding process.
  • Class Rank
The University of Chicago Law School does not calculate students’ g.p.a., nor does it rank its students.
  • Student Privacy
It is the Law Schools’ policy not to provide employers with demographic information about any of its students. In the same regard, we cannot provide employers with students campus address, telephone, or e-mail addresses.
  • Equal Employment Opportunity and Nondiscrimination Policy
The University of Chicago Law School is committed to the principle of equal opportunity for all persons on the basis of individual merit and therefore does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or veteran status, and does not discriminate against members of protected classes under the law.  The University of Chicago Law School requires all employers using the services and facilities of the Office of Career Services to comply with this policy; with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations; and with pertinent standards of the American Bar Association and the Association of American Law Schools. An exception to this policy is granted to the United States military.

PROGRAM PROCEDURES

Interview Date Assignments
The interview date assignment process will begin after April 10, 2017. In order to assign dates, the eight days of recruiting are divided into four groups of two days each. Date assignments are made on a rotating basis; e.g., employers who interviewed in group two one year, will move to group three the following year. These factors are considered when interview dates are assigned:

(1) Interview date assignment last year (employers recruiting nationally, and law firms based in Chicago, New York City, Washington, DC and California are rotated each year)
(2) Date when registration was submitted
(3) Any date preferences indicated on the registration form

No Hospitality Suite Arrangements
Unfortunately, we are not in a position to offer employers a hospitality suite. Given the abundance of employers who want to interview on-campus, all of our interview rooms must be dedicated to accommodating this need.

We cannot offer a vacant interview room (from employers who cancelled their interview schedule) as a hospitality suite on the interview day.

Interview Date Confirmation
Confirmation of your interview date will be made the week of May 15, 2017. To view your confirmed interview date:

  • Login into your University of Chicago Law School Symplicity account at https://law-uchicago-csm.symplicity.com/employers
  • Click “On-Campus Recruiting” on the toolbar at the top of the page
  • Click the “Confirmed Schedules” tab (make sure the “Session” drop down field is set to August OCI 2017)
  • Add the name(s) of your interviewer(s) by clicking on the assigned date, going to the “Interviewer(s)” field, and clicking the “Add Name” button
  • Click “Profile” on the toolbar at the top of the page if you wish to add employer profile information for students’ viewing

Detailed information about transportation to and from the interview site, interview site and room location directions, check-in procedures, interviewer procedures, food, and breaks will be enclosed with the confirmation.

Student Interview Schedule(s)
The Symplicity algorithm generates a schedule complete with student interview times based on student bid preferences and availability, interview schedule capacity, and time availability. The published on-line schedule will also give you access to the resumes for students who were placed on the interview schedule.

Interview Schedule(s) and Resumes Publication
An e-mail will notify when your interview schedules are available for viewing. Simply:

  • Login into your University of Chicago Law School Symplicity account at https://law-uchicago-csm.symplicity.com/employers
  • Click “On-Campus Recruiting” on the toolbar at the top of the page
  • Click the “Resume/Schedule Packets” tab to obtain a copy of the schedule with the students’ resumes behind it, or
  • Click the “Interviews” tab for on-line viewing (verify the “Session” drop down field is set to August 2016 OCI). You are free to create your own Resume/Schedule packet of student interviewees by selecting all of them (click the blue plus sign), and then clicking the “Generate Resume/Applicant packet” button (the system will send you an e-mail notifying you that your packet is ready and available)

Interview Schedule(s) Student Overflow (unscheduled students)

Interviewing employers also have access to students who are on an overflow list of students who did not get scheduled. To view them:

  • Login into your University of Chicago Law School Symplicity account at https://law-uchicago-csm.symplicity.com/employers
  • Click “On-Campus Recruiiting” on the toolbar at the top of the page
  • Click the “Overflow Interest” tab (verify the “Session” drop down field is set to August 2016 OCI) to see the students and their resumes. You are free to create your own Resume/Schedule packet of overflow students by selecting any of them, and then clicking the “Generate Resume/Applicant packet” button (the system will send you an e-mail notifying you that your packet is ready and available)

You are permitted to review the list and encourage anyone on the overflow list to sign up for any available blank time slot during the Open Sign up period for your interview date (that period begins 48 hours and ends 24 hours in advance of your interview date). Employers are not permitted to add any overflow students to the interview schedule(s).

Be mindful that some students on the overflow list may already appear on the interview schedule if you had a multi-office interview schedule configuration; these students submitted multiple bids for other offices, but could only interview one time. They are easily identified in the last column “Other Interviews.”
