Defenders and the Science Policy Group are joining forces in hosting an interactive workshop exploring the relationship between science and the law. What is the relationship between empirics and our standards of proof? How do standards that verify scientific research in academia compare to court procedures meant to ensure only valid science gets in front of a jury? And why is science so powerful in court? We will work through some of these fundamental questions through case studies, bringing law students and scientist graduate students at UChicago together to dialogue on how to most effectively and fairly bring science into the court of law.
