Visiting Lecturer

Shamshad Pasarlay is a visiting lecturer of law at the University of Chicago. He is a columnist (2022) for the Blog of the International Journal of Constitutional Law (I·CONnect). Previously, he was a lecturer at Herat University School of Law and Political Science in Afghanistan and a visiting research fellow at the Center for Asian Legal Studies, National University of Singapore. He was the founding member of Afghanistan Constitutional Studies Institute. Shamshad Pasarlay teaches and researches in the areas of constitutionalism, law and religion; institutional engineering in divided societies; Islamic law and courts; and Islamic constitutionalism with a focus on Afghanistan. He has worked extensively in the area of legal reform in Afghanistan with a host of international rule of law organizations. Shamshad Pasarlay received his BA in Islamic studies from Kabul University (2010) and an LLM and PhD in comparative constitutionalism from the University of Washington School of Law (2016).
