Sony Music Names Stephanie Yu General Counsel
Stephanie Yu, a 21-year veteran of Sony Music, has been promoted to general counsel and executive vice president, business and legal affairs, filling the role vacated by longtime legal chief Julie Swidler, who stepped down in June after an 18-year tenure.
Sony Music announced the appointment, saying Yu will report to Rob Stringer, chairman of Sony Music Group, and Kevin Kelleher, the company's chief operating officer. She will oversee Sony Music's global business, legal and governmental affairs functions.
The appointment formalizes a succession plan that had remained unresolved since Swidler announced in May that she would leave at the end of June. At the time, Sony said no successor had been selected. Swidler, who became general counsel in 2008, oversaw legal strategy across the company's global portfolio of labels and businesses and was among the most prominent legal executives in the music industry.
