As the Illinois Legislature debates a bill to legalize same-sex civil unions, H.B. 2234, one anxiety often expressed is that the passage of this bill would insult our religious heritage -- signaling the triumph of secular thought, and the sexual revolution, over Judeo-Christian values. How should defenders of the bill respond to this argument?

First, it's important to recognize that this is not an issue where religion is on one side, secular thought on another. Religions in America are deeply divided over same-sex unions. My own denomination, Reform Judaism, strongly supports same-sex marriage, as do Conservative and Reconstructionist Judaism, Unitarian Universalism and a number of smaller denominations.
