Visiting Students

Thank you for your interest in applying to the University of Chicago Law School as a visiting student. Visiting students may spend all or a portion of their third academic year of law school at UChicago.  Only law students currently enrolled in a U.S. J.D. program are eligible to apply as a visiting student to the University of Chicago Law School.

In reviewing visiting student applications, our Admissions Committee primarily considers two factors: (1) the nature of your reasons for wanting to study law at UChicago; and (2) the probability that your academic performance here will meet the requirements imposed by your current law school.

Please complete our Visiting Application electronically through the Law School Admission Council ("LSAC"). The Visiting Application will be available in April. For those seeking to visit during the fall quarter or the entire academic year, the application deadline is June 30.  You must submit all required application materials: the application, a resume, personal statement, two letters of recommendation, a law school transcript, and the Visiting Student Approval Form. Please make sure to describe the reasons for your interest in studying at UChicago in your personal statement.

Please pay special attention to question number 3 on the Visiting Student Approval Form, which is a supplemental form that you will download from LSAC. Since UChicago is likely to be on a different academic calendar than the law school you now attend, the date our grades become available may have an impact on your graduation date and your ability to take the July bar examination. You may wish to discuss this issue with the administration at your law school and the bar examiners in the state where you plan to take the bar examination. Please note that your law school will need to submit the Visiting Student Approval Form directly to the Admissions Office and it cannot be transmitted through LSAC at this time.

Scholarship support is not available to visiting students, although you may qualify for government and private loans through your home law school. The current tuition rate and student budget is available here. Please also note that UChicago does not offer a part-time or evening academic program. We offer a full-time day program only.

Please contact us at admissions@law.uchicago.edu if you have any questions.
