Application process
Applying to the University of Chicago Law School: Each year we seek to create a community from among the best, brightest, and most academically oriented law school applicants. We want students who are intellectually curious, lively, collegial, and rigorous in their academic approach. We want students who will take their legal education seriously but not take themselves too seriously. And because we are preparing students to enter a multi-faceted profession, we want multi-dimensional students with a wide range of talents, backgrounds, experiences, and accomplishments.
You may choose to be considered for Early or Regular Decision. The deadlines given are firm.
Completed Applications can be submitted electronically starting September 1, 2007. We encourage you to submit your completed electronic application as soon as possible and well before the February 1 Regular Decision or the December 1 Early Decision deadlines.
Early Decision: If you are interested in applying for Early Decision, you must complete and submit electronically the separate Early Decision Fall 2008 application. Applicants who wish to be considered for Early Decision must ensure that we have received their applications and all supporting materials by December 1, 2007. They will be notified of the Admissions Committee's decision by the end of December. Applicants should note that LSAC only sends the application to the Law School when all required materials have been processed by LSAC. Their applications will not be deemed complete (for Early or Regular Decision deadlines) until the Admissions Office has received electronically all required application materials from LSAC. If admitted, Early Decision applicants must commit to enrolling at the Law School and must withdraw all applications at other law schools. Some Early Decision applicants who are not admitted during the Early Decision cycle will be reevaluated during the Regular Decision cycle.
Admission during Early Decision is binding on applicants. You may not apply for another binding early decision program, and if admitted for Early Decision, you must enroll at the Law School and withdraw all applications at other law schools regardless of your status. You must indicate your intention to apply early decision on your application.
As an Early Decision applicant, you will be informed by the end of December that your application has been accepted, denied, or deferred for further review. If your application is deferred, it will be considered again in the Regular Decision cycle and admission will no longer be binding upon you.
Regular Decision: If you wish to be considered for Regular Decision, your application must be received by February 1, 2008. Please keep in mind that while February 1 is the application deadline, all Regular Decision applications are considered on a rolling basis once they are complete. Applicants for Regular Decision may submit their applications starting September 1.
Applicants should note that LSAC only sends the application and supporting materials to the Law School when all required materials have been processed by LSAC. Upon receipt, we will send out a "completed application" e-mail notice. Therefore, an e-mail address is required. Applications will be considered in the order they are completed. Completed files will be sent to the Admissions Committee for review starting in November. Decisions will be made on a rolling basis and will continue until all applications have been reviewed. Any applications received after February 1 will be considered on a space-available basis only.
The Law School will continue to accept applications after February 1. Please note, however, that applications received after February 1 will be considered on a space-available basis and will be awarded scholarship assistance only if funds remain.
Applying to Joint Degree Programs: Many students are interested in simultaneously pursuing degrees at other divisions of the University. If you are interested in one of the joint degree programs, you must apply to and be accepted by both the Law School and the other division. You may choose to enroll in the Law School before applying to other programs. Information about whom to contact at other divisions can be obtained online at www.uchicago.edu.
