Joseph Bial '01 Promoted to Special Counsel of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP

Joseph Bial has been promoted to Special Counsel of Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP, effective January 1, 2010.

Bial, a member of the Antitrust Group based in Washington, D.C., who also works out of the firm's Beijing office, focuses his practice on antitrust law, general commercial litigation, and corporate and securities matters for clients in the United States and throughout Asia. In addition to representing parties in federal district and appellate courts and before state and federal regulatory agencies, he advises companies in domestic and international transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions, public offerings and private placements, and IP licensing. He also represents on a pro bono basis members of the U.S. armed services. Mr. Bial received his undergraduate degree from Miami University, a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Arizona, and a J.D., with high honors, from the University of Chicago Law School, where he was a Bradley Fellow and a John M. Olin Fellow, the recipient of the Olin Prize in Law & Economics, and a member of Order of the Coif.

Following law school, he served as a law clerk for Chief Judge Douglas H. Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and Justice Robert L. Eastaugh of the Alaska Supreme Court. An Adjunct Professor of Law at George Mason School of Law teaching Advanced Antitrust, Mr. Bial has testified as an economic expert and consulted as an economist. He is a member of the bar in New York and in the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Sixth and Seventh Circuits and the U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia, the Northern District of Illinois, and the Southern District of New York. Before joining Cadwalader, Mr. Bial worked at law firms in Chicago, New York, Washington, D.C., and Tokyo.
