Sophonisba's Choice

Sophonisba Breckinridge was the first woman to graduate from the Law School, graduating with the first full class in 1904. She stated in her autobiography: "My record there was not distinguished, but the faculty and students were kind, and the fact that the law school like the rest of the University … accepted men and women students on equal terms was publicly settled." She was also the first woman to receive a Ph.D. in political science from the University, and was the founder of the University's School of Social Service Administration.
