President Obama’s move on visitation rights may be a game changer of sorts. But reaction is divided over whether it really moves anything in the more significant arena of gay rights – marriage. One of our more famous philosophers has no fear of treading on that terrain. Martha Nussbaum is kind of an academic triple threat –she’s a philosopher, legal professor and religious scholar. Her new book is called From Disgust to Humanity: Sexual Orientation and Constitutional Law. In it she tackles the legal and moral arguments fueling opposition to gay marriage. Nussbaum recently spoke with local writer and Eight Forty-Eight contributor Ron Litke. She began by explaining the meaning of her phrase—the politics of disgust.
